    Overview

    Form 1099-DA is a new form introduced for the 2025 tax year to report the sale or exchange of digital assets. This form is used by brokers, including digital asset trading platforms, payment processors, and other digital asset middlemen.

    The form reports gross proceeds from digital asset transactions and may include basis information for covered securities. For 2025, reporting of gross proceeds is mandatory while basis reporting is voluntary. Starting in 2026, both gross proceeds and basis reporting will be mandatory for covered securities.

    Important Filing Notes

    Phased Implementation

    For 2025, gross proceeds reporting is mandatory but basis reporting is voluntary. Starting in 2026, both gross proceeds and basis are mandatory for covered securities.

    Covered vs. Noncovered

    Covered securities are those acquired after the effective date where basis reporting is required. Noncovered securities are older holdings or those where basis reporting is not mandated.

    Digital Asset Definition

    Digital assets include cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum), stablecoins, NFTs, and other digitally recorded property on cryptographically secured distributed ledgers.

    Broker Responsibility

    Digital asset brokers and middlemen are responsible for tracking transactions, calculating proceeds, and determining covered/noncovered status for customer transactions.
